THE PERSON BEHIND THE PRACTICE

Meet the Architect

The passion, philosophy, and proficiency behind my work.
Portrait of Gary Bartanus
Gary Bartanus

I design learning experiences that honour the whole person—recognizing that confidence, emotional safety, and a sense of belonging matter just as much as the content being taught.

My approach brings together evidence-based instructional design, thoughtful technology, and a commitment to making learning accessible, engaging, and genuinely empowering.

Community Service

Co-Creating Healthcare Solutions with Empathy

Serving Our Local Community

Kristy and I were thrilled to volunteer at Island Health’s 2025 Code Hack, a healthcare-focused hackathon at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. Kristy participated as an Ally while I contributed as a Designer, leveraging my skills in learning design and team facilitation.

Our team tackled the challenge of reducing senior isolation near the end of life by proposing an affordable multigenerational housing model to help elders stay connected and age with dignity. I had the privilege of opening our presentation, using my experience in narrative crafting. The weekend was vibrant and inspiring, filled with passionate individuals, including a joyful physician from Nepal who showcased the power of kindness and optimism.

Audio-Visual & Technical Ministry

Supporting Collective Spaces

During my time as an AV technician at Rest Haven SDA Church, I had the privilege of working with a warm and welcoming team. They brought enthusiasm, mutual respect, and openness to new ideas to everything they did, and from the team leaders on down, everyone was focused on serving others and supporting the community.

Working with this team helped me grow as a technician and as a person of faith. I came away with lasting friendships and valuable lessons in teamwork and respect. Adam, Louise, Harley, and the team didn’t just talk about service. They lived it every week.

The Agape Methodology

ADDIE-Informed Architecture

Structure in service of the learner

Every project moves through a disciplined cycle — Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate — but the cycle is held by a single question: what does this learner need to flourish?
The framework keeps the work rigorous; the mission keeps it warm. Evaluation sits at the centre, because good design listens before it concludes.

Stewardship of Multimedia Production

Aside from expertise in adult learning theory, UX design best practices, and pedagogy, another factor that distinguishes my work is the ability to produce engaging, effective multimedia content in my own fully equipped studio. This significantly reduces the need to pay additional fees to external video production companies, voiceover artists, and on-camera talent. It also results in engaging, transformative learning.
